Uncle Leo’s award winning Craft beer comes in a variety of types. We currently have four core ales that we brew on a weekly basis, with additional seasonal offerings.
Our Core Ales
Uncle Leo’s Red Ale
Uncle Leo’s Red Ale is the first beer we ever brewed at Uncle Leo’s Brewery and at 5.0% ABV is an easy-drinking pint, with a moderate malt character full of caramel and toasted notes. Uncle Leo lived in a very Irish place where the “old brogue”, as my Mother would call it, ran thick and most of my ancestors married Irish women; so raise a glass and enjoy a beer inspired by the love of an easy drinking pint and an Irish-Newfoundland heritage.
Uncle Leo’s IPA
Uncle Leo’s IPA is an American Style India Pale Ale. The hops in this beer give it a citrusy, tropical fruit aroma and taste ending in a clean dry finish.
Smoked Porter
Uncle Leo’s Smoked Porter is for the person who loves bold malty beers. Our Smoked Porter offers up aromas of smokey roasted malt with hints of chocolate and coffee. Goes well with a campfire, or fireplace, too.
Sunburst Pale Ale
Our friends and musicians Dave Gunning, Jamie Robinson, and J.P. Cormier teamed up with Uncle Leo’s to produce Sunburst. With loads of citrus aroma and flavour we think this American pale ale hits all the right notes!
Seasonal Offerings
Altbier
Our Altbier is made in the style of the Altbiers from Dusseldorf Germany where “alt” refers to the old style of brewing. This beer has an assertive hop bitterness from the German noble hop varieties used that is well balanced by its robust, yet clean, crisp malt character.
Ceilidh Ale
Ceilidh Ale is our take on the Kolsch style. This style developed in Cologne, Germany in the late 1800’s to compete with the increase in pale lagers. This pale refreshing beer is a clean, crisp beer with a very subtle malt and hop character and makes a great session beer. A Ceilidh is a traditional Scottish or Irish social gathering, usually with traditional music in a community setting. This refreshing ale accompanied by good music and good friends is a perfect Nova Scotia pairing.
Vohs Weizenbier
Vohs Weizenbier is a German Wheat Beer and is a seasonal offering at Uncle Leo’s. It is our tribute to our neighbours, Matt and Brenda Vohs, the owners of Piper’s Landing Restaurant, Lyon’s Brook, NS, and the first customer to put our beer on tap. Vohs Weizenbier is a pale, refreshing beer with a distinctive banana and clove character, low hop bitterness, and a relatively dry finish. The high protein content of the wheat in this beer impairs clarity and is normal for this style.
Cream Stout
Uncle Leo’s Cream Stout is inspired by the cream stouts that were popular in Great Britain during the early 20th century. Cream stout contains lactose, a sugar derived from milk, which adds a subtle sweetness and body that compliments the notes of dark chocolate, coffee and the roasty finish.
NACHTical Illustion
NACHTical ILLUSION: Schwarzbier is German for black beer and originated in southeastern Germany. But unlike British-style dark ales, this German-style black lager does not display the roasted grain flavors and aromas found in most stouts. Instead it produces very mild notes of chocolate, coffee or vanilla.
Jam Session
Jam Session is an American Session Ale that we are just having fun with. Each release may feature different hops and/or other additions just for the hell of it. We promise to keep you in the group.
