Raising a glass for Uncle Leo

Karl Whiffen isn’t sure if he’s following in his great uncle’s tradition with the new beer he started to brew in Lyons Brook on Saturday.
“The best I can tell, he made an English bitter,” the forester-turned-brewer said of his Uncle Leo, the namesake for the two-year-old Pictou County brewery he and his wife own. “This one will be a departure.”
But Uncle Leo may well have made wet-hop beer back in the 1940s in Newfoundland, if someone who grew fresh hops had pitched the idea to him.
